4 MOUNT STREET

4 MOUNT STREET

Ever since the Duke of Grosvenor developed the Mayfair area, 4 Mount Street has been home to a printing business. The building’s very first tenant was Henningham & Hollis, a company by Royal Appointment, specialising in engraving. They operated for almost a hundred years until they ceased trading in 1979.

DISCOVERED HERITAGE

DISCOVERED HERITAGE

In 1981, Peter and Fridette Cain were introduced to the printing industry through the Kall-Kwik franchise, which they hoped to expand across the UK. Whilst searching for a suitable first location, Peter discovered an available shop lease at 4 Mount Street—coincidentally, the location of Henningham & Hollis which had closed two years prior. They began with only two employees, offering fast printing, photocopying, and litho-printing services.

MAKING THEIR MARK

MAKING THEIR MARK

Peter and Fridette’s connection to the former business grew as customers returned for engraved stationery, prompting them to rethink Kall-Kwik’s suitability. A year in, they seized the opportunity to acquire the head lease, investing in a quiet yet architecturally notable Mount Street with twelve vacant shops. Recognising the importance of name and location, they rebranded as The Mount Street Printers & Stationers Ltd.

1984

After two years immersed in engraving, Peter and Fridette assembled their first machine, Bertha, marking a pivotal step for the business. Demand for quality printing, led by engraving, surged as they mastered this intricate craft requiring skill, precision, and time. More machines followed—Mildred, Gladys, and Ebony. Over the next decade, the business expanded significantly, fuelled by their passion for fine printing, Fridette’s storytelling and craftsmanship, and Peter’s love of machinery.

1990

In 1990, they took a significant step into full-colour litho-printing, installing a massive machine in the basement of their Grade II listed building—a challenging feat. This move bridged modern demands with traditional techniques, enabling them to integrate seamlessly into the rapidly evolving world of printing.

2000

Having just graduated from university and eager to make a mark, Alex joined the family-run business. His first projects involved rebranding, moving the focus to print rather than stationery and shortening the name of the business from The Mount Street Printers & Stationers Ltd to Mount Street Printers.

2004

Shortly after, the company started producing their first range of in-house papers, aiming to reduce reliance on external suppliers and further expand the business’s offerings.

2011

Always looking ahead, they embraced another new method: digital printing. This method allowed for very short runs and rapid turnaround times. By this time, as demands grew, so did the team, expanding to twenty-five skilled members.

2012

The year 2012 marked an important moment in the history of Mount Street Printers. The business was granted a Royal Warrant by His Royal Highness Prince of Wales, highlighting its commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

2015

By 2015, the company had outgrown its original location, prompting the family to invest in a 10,000-square-foot production site in Acton, where over 40 machines were housed to produce their work. The near derelict property was fully refurbished to meet their exacting standards, allowing them to operate from both locations creating even more room for growth.

2018

Prior to 2018, envelope-making had been outsourced to various specialised suppliers. With growing demand and lots of available space, the company invested in an in-house envelope-making machine. This significantly sped up the process and enabled them to produce branded envelopes and fulfil bespoke requests.

2020

With the help of friends, designer Adam Bray and MDEM Architects, the shop underwent a complete refurbishment while production in its entirety moved to Acton. The redesign focused on retail at the front, relocating the office to the back and giving the space a fresh, chic look. Ebony, one of their original die-stamping machines, remains on display in the redesigned showroom downstairs.

2025

Today, Mount Street Printers remains a family concern, employing just over thirty-five dedicated and skilled team members, many of whom have been with the company for over twenty years. The pride the Cains take in their work is evident in every piece of printing produced, reflecting a commitment to quality, customer satisfaction and their core mission: to create lasting impressions.
